Externships

What is an Externship?

An externship is a valuable component of many technical school programs.** It’s a structured, supervised experience at a business location that allows you to apply your classroom knowledge in a real-world professional setting. Here’s why externships matter:

  • Gain Practical Experience: Externships take you beyond textbooks, giving you hands-on practice with the tools, technologies, and daily tasks of your chosen field.
  • Build Your Network: Connect directly with potential employers, mentors, and industry professionals, expanding your opportunities for future jobs.
  • Develop Essential Skills: Externships help you improve communication, problem-solving, and teamwork – the skills employers seek.
  • Get an Edge: Resume-boosting experience gained during your externship can make you a more attractive job candidate after graduation.
**Externship opportunities are not available with every program and not available for students attending online.

How Does an Externship Work?

  1. Finding the Right Fit: Your school’s academics team collaborates with you to find an externship aligned with your career interests.
  2.  Mentorship & Learning: During your externship, you’ll work under experienced professionals, receiving guidance and feedback to hone your skills.
  3. Progress Tracking: You’ll document your externship journey, reflecting on what you’ve learned and how your skills are developing.
