Before the pandemic, it was normal to expect students to sit in traditional classrooms to learn. Now, student expectations and demands for institutes of higher learning have changed. Both recent high school graduates and adult learners returning to school are interested in programs with flexible learning options.
Miller-Motte College understands not every student can commit to in-person coursework. We also understand not every student wants to attend classes 100% online. We aim to provide quality, flexible education options to meet the demands of our students.
We offer three learning modes so students are not forced to choose between their goals and obligations.
3 Common Learning Modes
Learning modes are how students interact with instruction and coursework. At Miller-Motte College, students can interact with instruction through in-person learning, online learning, and hybrid learning. Each mode comes with its advantages and disadvantages.
In-Person Learning
In-person, or on-campus learning, is education provided in a classroom setting. Students in this mode commit several hours during the week to attending classes. These classes are at a specific time in a specific campus location.
Students in this mode receive in-person instruction from industry-experienced instructors and instantaneous feedback should they have any questions.
Some pros for in-person learning include:
- Distraction-free learning environment
- Easier to access additional academic resources
- Hands-on participation
Some cons for in-person learning include:
- Little flexibility regarding class location and time
- Students may need to commute
- Learning options may be limited to your area
Online Learning
Online learning, referred to as virtual, distance, or remote learning, occurs when students learn outside of a traditional classroom setting. Instruction is conducted through the Internet and can be accessed as live lectures (synchronous-remote learning) or pre-recorded videos (asynchronous-remote learning).
Online classes following a synchronous-remote format require students to attend lectures at specified times. These students can still learn wherever they have internet access. However, students in this mode are expected to log in at designated times to attend lectures.
Asynchronous-remote learning may also consist of reading assignments, essays, discussion posts, and more. Students in this mode of learning can attend class wherever they can access the Internet. Miller-Motte College currently only offers asynchronous-remote learning modes.
Online classes following an asynchronous-remote format provides students the flexibility to learn at their own pace, on their own time. The student decides when they access the material to engage in learning. Lesson pacing is determined by the student, but most assignments have a timeframe in which they are to be completed.
Some pros for online learning include:
- Accessible to more students
- Students attend wherever they have internet access*
- Students can regularly revisit material
Some cons for online learning include:
- Students must have reliable internet access
- Students must be self-motivated
- Students may experience a distracted learning environment
- Miller-Motte College only offers asynchronous-remote learning modes.
Hybrid Learning
Hybrid learning is a combination of in-person and online learning. At Miller-Motte, students in this learning mode attend part of each class or course in-person while they complete some of their coursework virtually. This mode alternates students between in-person attendance and virtual attendance based on program specifics.
Some pros for hybrid learning include:
- Students participate in virtual and face-to-face lessons
- Students get hands-on experience at the campus
- Flexibility makes it accessible to more students
Some cons for hybrid learning include:
- Students must have internet access
- Students must manage their time effectively to complete virtual coursework on time
- Students may become easily distracted
What Do Learning Modes Mean for Students?
Learning modes make reaching academic goals more accessible for students by allowing students to choose how they want to learn based on their learning styles and current needs. This helps foster a positive, more fulfilling student experience as they complete their studies.
